How can a photon exist in 2 places at once?

I saw an experiment on tv which tested photons. A single photon was shot down a tube. The tube had a solid divider with 2 slits. The photon went through both slits. Shouldn't it go through one or the other and NOT both? Can you explain what's happening in simple terms?
