Word-Processed Doent Etiquette.?

I know that handwritten text does not require spaces in between the last line of a paragraph and the first (indented) line of a new paragraph, but what is the rule (if any) with regards to typed doents? I know of teachers who advocate both methods, but I really need this to look professional. Any input would be appreciated. No patronising, please.
