Why is my shutter speed slow using the SB-600 flash unit?

My manual says the the flash unit won't let the camera go any faster than 1/60 sec on the shutter speed. I thought I'd get a faster shutter speed with a flash unit, not slower. I'm in Aperture Priority Mode most of the time using the Nikon D80.
